SAFMI CEO Introduces Mosquito-Eating Fish! and Calls for More Support

On July 30, 2024, the Save Africa from Malaria Infection (SAFMI) Foundation hosted a training session for volunteers in Sierra Leone, focusing on innovative malaria control methods. Led by Artem Volchenko, SAFMI's CEO, this event marked the beginning of efforts to implement natural, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly mosquito control strategies.

SAFMI's strategy involves introducing Gambusia affinis, or mosquitofish, into water bodies to consume mosquito larvae, reducing mosquito populations and malaria incidence. These resilient fish thrive in various water conditions and can reproduce quickly, ensuring a sustainable population for effective mosquito control.

The foundation's initiative is structured into three phases:

  • Partnerships: Collaborating with local businesses and institutions to place water tanks with Gambusia, serving as both functional solutions and educational tools.
  • Maintenance: Volunteers conduct weekly visits to maintain fish health and tank cleanliness.
  • Training: Providing volunteers with skills in fish care, breeding, and tank maintenance.

Alhaji Dauda Bangura emphasized the initiative's alignment with WHO's malaria prevention efforts. SAFMI's program, active in Sierra Leone for four months, has shown promise in reducing malaria. Volunteers engaged actively during the session, ensuring they were well-prepared for their roles.

SAFMI aims to expand its efforts to other African countries, including Liberia, Guinea, and The Gambia, with continued support from local and international partners, striving to eradicate malaria and improve public health across the continent.
